"GreenPAD" is a research project funded by the German Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWI). It is part of the IT2Green initiative which targets energy-efficient solutions in the areas of "telecommunication networks", "computing centres and clouds" as well as "monitoring and management".

The aim of GreenPAD is the development, testing and transfer of an energy-optimal ICT infrastructure model for commercial and scientific computing clusters. The involved universities and local industry partners are to combine their ICT infrastructures and so to reduce the total energy demand. Here the whole value creation chain will be considered including the acquisition of energy-efficient components, the control of the computing centre and the terminals in the companies and universities. Besides, first cloud services will be developed for university departments, research projects, start-ups and other small companies.

The project seeks to run computing centres mostly on locally produced green energy. For this a „green control centre“ will be developed which has to cope with a variable energy supply on the one hand and service-level agreements between provider and customer on the other hand.
